Manifesto for a European Renaissance br Alain de Benoist and Charles Champetier br br This book may be misunderstood as a political treatise It is deeper than that It is a cultural manifesto The problem of the west is not political it is cultural Politics are a subset of culture not the other way around The ideas of the French New Right now increasingly called the European New Right ENR belong first to the realm of culture One of the most fascinating aspects of the the thought of Alain de Benoist is his unabashed paganism His is not the paganism of re enactors who play at being Vikings or Druids but rather a philosophical paganism borne of ancient Indo European ideology and myth This Manifesto is a clear and succinct outline of the ideology in question in clear practical and current political context and the text is the best of all starting points to understand this important stream of political and cultural thought, i Beyond Human Rights i is the second in an ongoing series of English translations of b Alain de Benoist s b works to be published by Arktos Alain de Benoist begins Beyond Human Rights with an examination of the origins of the concept of human rights in European Antiquity in which rights were defined in terms of the individual s relationship to his community and were understood as being exclusive to that community alone This changed with the coming of Christianity to Europe after which rights were redefined as a universal concept derived from the idea of each individual as the possessor of a soul that is transcendent and independent of any social identity This culminated in the Enlightenment belief in natural rights which found its practical expression in the doctrines emerging from the American and French revolutions in which all individuals were said to possess rights simply by virtue of the fact of their being human In turn laws issued by the State came to be viewed as negative impositions upon the naturally independent individual De Benoist deconstructs this idea and shows how the myth of a natural man who possesses rights independent of his community is indefensible and how this conception of rights has in modern times led to their use as a weapon by stronger nations to bludgeon those weaker states which do not conform to the Western liberal democratic form of rights as we have recently seen in action in the former Yugoslavia Iraq and Libya As such he presents us with a crucial critique of one of the major issues of our time, The problem with most discussions of the crisis Benoist notes is that they focus on attempting to reform the present economic system in order to prevent such disasters from recurring This is a mistake he says since the problem actually lies with the nature of the present day form of international capitalism itself a system which privileges the unbridled desires of the individual over the needs of the community which protects the wealthy at the cost of the middle class and the poor and which is causing so much suffering worldwide by making it easy for corporations in the richer countries to outsource their labour to other disadvantaged ones to the detriment of both It is this system which must be questioned at its very foundations Benoist holds both the Left and Right equally responsible for this situation since the mainstream in both currents has come to unconditionally accept the idea that liberalism and globalised capitalism are not only the best but the only desirable method of structuring economies in the world today Meanwhile the international financial system teeters on the brink with American debt soaring and the euro on the verge of implosion Benoist not only explores the roots of how this situation came about but also makes suggestions on what might be done about it The current crisis is not simply a temporary one it is the consequence of the logic of capital which knows only one watchword more More profits more goods and more trade even at the price of austerity measures which hit the poorest Such a system cannot last forever Here is why, No description available
