La Montagne magique est le roman le plus important qui ait paru en Europe depuis et je pense le plus beau Et le Prix Nobel lui a t d cern juste titre Cette uvre a le m rite de ne ressembler aucun roman ant rieur Dans la plupart des romans m me des meilleurs il est rare de ne pas distinguer un accent d j familier ici Balzac ou Stendhal l Emily Bront plus loin Fro mentin ou Flaubert Tolsto ou Dosto evski Avec la Montagne ma gique nous n entendons rien de pareil La naissance de la fi vre chez Hans ses deux sc nes d amour Clawdia sa vision dans la neige son dernier colloque avec Peeperkorn la mort de Ziemssen sont des choses d une nouveaut absolue des cr ations compl tes Et de m me les curieuses figures de Settembrini de Naphta et du Hollandais Enfin la valeur pour ainsi dire symphonique du livre est faite du quadruple th me de la Vie et de la Mort du Temps et de l Amour qui tant t concret et tant t abstrait tant t d velopp dans une atmosph re passionnelle tant t dans une atmosph re id ologique forme un climat donne la Montagne magique son air de roman pique Soutenue par ces quatre l ments elle peut s lever la fois sur plusieurs plans les uns philosophiques les autres r alistes ceux ci symboliques ou moraux et nous donner ainsi le sentiment d une repr sentation tr s vaste du drame humain que nous vivons tous .
